The particular blue of the sea just before evening begins. What Inspires Our Designs at Balearic Cafe is rarely one grand reference. It is a collection of small signals that stay with us: light, sound, texture, space and the feeling that the night still has plenty of time.

We make pieces for people who notice these things too. Not as souvenirs of a specific place, but as a way of carrying a little more air through ordinary days.

Mediterranean light, left uncomplicated

Mediterranean light changes the rules of colour. It makes white feel softer, blue feel almost weightless and washed-out shades feel more alive than anything overly polished. That brightness is a starting point for many of our palettes, but we are not chasing postcard perfection.

We are more interested in the colours that appear around the edges: sun-faded cotton, a pale peach wall, stone under bare feet, the grey-blue horizon when the heat eases. These tones have room to breathe. They sit easily with each other and with the person wearing them.

Minimal design can sometimes become cold or overly precise. Our aim is the opposite. We use restraint to create ease. A quiet colour, a considered placement, a shape that does not demand the whole room. Clothes should be allowed to have good manners.

That does not mean every design must be pale or barely there. Some ideas call for a brighter note, especially when a graphic needs the lift of a warm, familiar colour. The test is simple: does it feel like sunlight, or does it feel like it is shouting across the beach? We know which one we prefer.

The warmth of 90s rave culture

The 90s are part of our visual memory, but not as a costume box. We return to the warmth around the music: hand-made flyers, hopeful typography, odd little symbols, photocopied textures and the sense that a dancefloor could be open to anyone willing to show up with an open mind.

There was optimism in that visual language. It could be playful without being childish, expressive without being severe. A smiley face was never required, thankfully, but the feeling behind it mattered. Music made strangers feel briefly connected. Graphics carried a message before the first track began.

We borrow that generosity rather than simply repeating its most obvious details. A motif may begin with the imperfect registration of old print, the rhythm of a radio ident or the way lettering looked after being copied one too many times. We like the human trace in these references. Perfection has its place, usually somewhere quite far from an after-hours flyer.

There is a trade-off here. Lean too hard into nostalgia and a design becomes a period piece. Strip away all reference and it can lose its pulse. The work sits best in the middle: familiar enough to stir a memory, open enough to belong to now.

Sound as a visual material

Our radio mixes are not separate from the clothing. They sharpen the same instinct. Balearic sound has space in it - percussion that wanders, melodies that catch the breeze, records that feel better once the sun has stopped trying so hard.

When we are working on a visual idea, we often think about pace. Does the graphic land like a gentle bassline? Is there enough silence around it? Does it feel good at 3pm and at 3am? These are not technical measurements, but they help us avoid adding something simply because empty space makes people nervous.

A good mix knows when not to force the next moment. Good design can do the same.

Coastal nostalgia without the souvenir shop

Coastal nostalgia is not about pretending every day is a holiday. It is about the details that make a place linger: tiled lettering, wind-creased posters, striped parasols, old matchbooks, marina signage and a shirt softened by many summers.

These references carry use and time. They are ordinary objects made quietly beautiful by sunlight, repetition and memory. We are drawn to that kind of beauty because it feels lived-in rather than staged.

Our designs often begin with a moodboard, though the useful part is not the neat grid at the end. It is the slow gathering beforehand. A photo of a hand-painted sign might sit beside a scanned paper texture, a record label, a hotel key tag or a note about the colour of late-afternoon water. Eventually, connections appear.

The final piece may contain none of those things literally. That is intentional. Direct quotation can make a design feel narrow. We would rather translate the atmosphere than reproduce the object. The result should leave space for your own memories, whether they come from an island, an estate by the coast, a bus ride to a first party or somewhere entirely different.

Why we keep things minimal

Minimalism, for us, is not an absence of personality. It is a way of choosing what deserves to remain. A small symbol can hold more feeling than a crowded print if it is placed well, printed with care and allowed enough surrounding space.

This approach also makes clothes easier to live with. A piece should work with your usual layers, favourite trousers and the clothes that have already earned their place in the wardrobe. The goal is not to create a uniform for a very specific type of person. It is to make a small visual companion that can become yours.

There are practical reasons for this, too. The more decorative a design becomes, the more quickly it can feel tied to one mood or moment. A quieter idea has a longer life. It can be worn on a bright day near the water, yes, but also on a damp Tuesday when the only available horizon is the view from the train.

That said, minimal does not mean timid. Sometimes a phrase needs to be large. Sometimes a colour needs to wake up a simple garment. The point is not to make everything whisper. It is to make sure it has something worth saying.

What inspires our designs at Balearic Cafe: openness

The strongest thread running through our work is openness. Openness to music that does not fit neatly in one box. Openness to personal style that is relaxed rather than performative. Openness to the idea that creativity can be social without becoming loud.

The word Café is a feeling, not a venue. It suggests a place in the mind with daylight, shared records, unhurried conversation and no need to prove that you know the right reference. You can arrive in a carefully assembled outfit or the same soft shirt you have worn all weekend. Both are entirely acceptable.

That openness guides how we think about graphics, too. We do not want a design to explain itself completely on first glance. A small ambiguity gives it room to travel. One person may see a coastline; another may think of a cassette in a glove compartment, a festival wristband kept too long or a tune they cannot quite identify.

The best response is not always, “I understand it.” Sometimes it is, “I know that feeling.”

Making room for your own story

Design begins with references, but it should not end there. Once a piece leaves the studio, it collects a life of its own: coffee spilled on a sleeve, a dance in a kitchen, a ferry crossing, an unexpected conversation after a set. We cannot plan those moments, and we would not want to.

Our role is to make the starting point feel considered, calm and full of possibility. A little Mediterranean light. A little rave warmth. A few marks that suggest the coast without insisting on it.

Wear what gives you room to move, listen closely and stay out until the air turns soft. The rest can remain pleasantly undefined.

90s rave inspired apparel blends club nostalgia with relaxed coastal style.
